Biology Research Intern Under PhD student

May - July 2019 • Portales, NM

What I liked

I loved the chance to work under a graduate student, to learn what happens in the field work of Biology and get that perspective outside of a classroom as well as getting volunteer hours while learning. This was something that I knew would either make or brake my next step in figuring out what I wanted to do with furthering my career/education. And I feel in love with the field work part of biology research.

What I wish was different

I had an amazing experience at the South West Research Station, I was able to meet many knowledgeable and respected biology researchers as well get to see the beautiful state of Arizona/New Mexico boarder and the biodiversity included as well. In saying this, I wish that I would have been able to stay longer, but I plan on fixing that by going back this upcoming summer to continue my internship!

Advice

My advice I would give to others about not only my experience, but all experiences that you take in life would be that the more you put in, the more you will get out. So take every opportunity, such as the research that I done in Arizona and run with it. Always be polite and leave your peers and your teachers with something positive to remember you by. Kindness, honesty, and hard work can go a long way.

Writing Consultant

August 2015 • Terre Haute, IN

What I liked

I love the opportunity to give back to the student population in not only helping them build upon the skills they already have, but letting them learn who they are and who they could be through expressing themselves in their writing. Plus, we are like a big family. The supportive environment working with coworkers who are also students or have recently graduated is really a relief. I genuinely enjoy coming into work.

What I wish was different

I wish the university would give us more funding so we could hire more tutors and administrators (or be willing to hire tutors on for more hours- most are limited at 20 or 28 hours/week)! In my time there we have always been short-staffed.

Advice

Take frequent breaks. Although we do around-the-clock drop ins instead of scheduling appointments, we are alloted a 5-10 minute (non-optional) break in between sessions. These are so necessary to clear one's head before the next appointment and to help keep from getting burnt out, which is easy to do when you're working with a vulnerable student population (those who are here because they've already admitted they need some kind of help) and one that may involve personal, emotional, or controversial subject matter.
