What I liked

I worked at a community garden and I loved to be able to have a stable outside job during a pandemic. Because it is outside I was still able to meet new people and learn many new things about organic gardening. I also got to eat the food I helped grow!

What I wish was different

My 675 hour service was assigned with only 3.5 months so I had to work long hours every week.

Advice

If you don’t know what you would like to do for a future job, volunteer somewhere! That is why I found the garden and fell in love with it.

What I liked

I enjoyed being able to work outside in the garden everyday and interacting with community members. I also liked living off of the vegetables and fruit that I grew in the garden.

What I wish was different

I had a lot of freedom to do what I wanted with the garden, but I also would have liked some more direction on projects or trips to other communities.

Advice

Some advice that I have is to create some garden events for community members. One example would be that this past summer we held an event every week called Yoga in the Garden. While the adults did yoga, the other two interns and I would take care of the kids and plan activities in the garden for them.

What I liked

I really enjoyed the sense of community from being with my crew so often and having to help each other. Some ways we helped each other were with cooking, cleaning, packing, and personal support. I enjoyed the countless good memories and different places we traveled together to enjoy our time and each other's company.

What I wish was different

I wish there was a higher wage. I am a college student and to be able to save up a little more money would have been extremely helpful.

Advice

Be prepared to step outside of your comfort zone. Be prepared to lean how to overcome and community through interpersonal conflicts. Be prepared to ask for help in trying and uncertain situations. Be prepared to open up to your supervisors on different struggles you face at work, whether physically, emotionally, spiritually, etc.
