Washington State Parks and Recreation

Park Aide

June - August 2019 • Hoquiam, WA

What I liked

I particularly enjoyed being able to diversify my network around the community. However, I learned a lot about the service industry and increase my communication skills to talk to various different people from a variety of backgrounds.

Advice

You're never stuck doing one thing. You'll be doing multiple jobs, some of which can be boring and slow, but you'll also be taking on tasks that are strenuous and not what you want. It's important to be flexible and keep a positive mindset each day you work.

Park Aide

June - October 2019 • Pasco, WA

What I liked

I thoroughly enjoyed being outside for the majority of my day, as well as being given a large amount of freedom in particular from being micromanaged.

What I wish was different

A more transparent understanding of how my personal day and time off accrued would have been greatly appreciated. The discrepancy between getting the personal day and not getting it was not thoroughly understood.

Advice

Make sure when you acquire this job, insist on being employed precisely 4 months after your START date. As in, if you start on the second of June, ensure your end date is the second of October, NOT the first of October. This will make sure you receive a personal day.
