Parks Planning Intern

January - May 2018 • San Francisco, CA

What I liked

The experience was such a refreshing role change for me. I had my own desk and was treated with respect, never belittled or patronized, despite being the youngest there. I learned important workplace skills that I practice in my group writing classes and I now know what a professional work environment should be like. Thanks to my mentor, Trevor in the Parks Planning department, this was possible.

What I wish was different

I wish my schedule had been more open to take classes that were available through the parks service. There were classes to identify native plants and opportunities to help dig trails in the local area. It was a rewarding experience and I would definitely do it again.

Advice

Working for the government is an entirely different culture than any I've ever experienced. It can be frustrating when you want things to move quickly, but know that every little form you sign and signature you ask for, are all small steps that will get you somewhere.

The opportunity to work outdoors and in the community. I enjoyed working with a non-profit organization and learning how it functions.

What I wish was different

Advice

Take the time to meet people in other departments and to learn about the organization.

Trails Intern

June - September 2018 • San Francisco, CA

What I liked

The members on my trail crew that I was placed in were friendly and helped make my experience enjoyable. I was able to see many different beautiful parklands all around the San Francisco Bay Area while at the same time helping to maintain and rebuild some of the trails that all access to these areas

What I wish was different

I would have enjoyed it more if there were more interns working at the same time as me. At the time I started there were only 3 other interns and by the time I was finished there were only 2 others

Advice

Although you only have 4 day workweeks, the day starts promptly at 7 and ends at 5:30 and the days are filled with physical work. It is very importalnd to make sure that you have enough time to eat and sleep between the time you get home around 6pm until you have to wake up around 6am the next morning. The provided housing in the Marin Headlands is amazing and the surrounding areas are beautiful, however if you do not have a car it is difficult to get in an out of the Headlands during your free time because the busses are infrequent and it is an incredibly far walk (hours) to get anywhere near San Francisco or Sausalito
