Software Developer Intern

May - August 2021 • Madison, WI

What I liked

Having an individual project that I was able to own was generally a good experience. I was able to choose the direction of some of my stretch goals and work closely with my mentor to ensure I was working to Epic's coding standards while also having freedom and flexibility without micromanaging.

What I wish was different

I wish I'd had more time or better training on the technologies I was expected to use. It felt like I was rushing to catch up on a language I'd never seen before and I felt behind much of the summer because of it. Ultimately it worked out okay though.

Advice

Be prepared to learn a new tech stack on your own - it's good and demonstrates your flexibility, but caught me by surprise.

What I liked

I loved the housing set-up: living with all the other interns was a blast and a great way to forge great connections. I felt Epic did a great job at placing me on a project that fit well with my skill set. The pay was competitive and I loved my experience!

What I wish was different

The on-site training was shortened because of COVID, so there was a steep learning curve for my project, but that was likely just a result of the pandemic and me not having a lot of web programming background. My team leader and mentor were super helpful though!

Software Developer Intern

May - August 2019 • Verona, WI

What I liked

My co-workers were encouraging and helpful to not only achieve my assignments, but also grow as a developer. The work environment is wonderful. I received a private office to work, and they encourage exploring their cool campus. Top tier food is provided for lunch that you pay for at a low cost.

What I wish was different

Towards the end of the internship (last week or two), I had a big ticket feature to implement (it wasn't a necessary feature, but it was something they would've liked). I knew I didn't have the time to implement it, so I kind of twiddled my thumbs towards the end. It would've been preferable to have some small features to implement in case this ever happened.

Advice

People say Epic will work you hard. I didn't experience this. I worked for 40 hours a week, and got everything done that was expected and done well. However, some other interns worked 45 hours a week because their project were larger. So don't believe the rumors, and do not ever leave things to the last minute. Something can always be better.

Software Developer Intern

May - August 2019 • Verona, WI

What I liked

The food, the campus, the pay, the city. Madison is awesome in the summer.

What I wish was different

I wish I'd been on a team where the full-timers were working with the same technologies I was using. This was largely due to a perfect storm of factors including team assigned, web migration progress, and regulatory changes, but it significantly impacted my ability to be productive.

What I liked

They fly you over for the final round and give accommodations during the interview period. The company headquarters is beautiful.

What I wish was different

Wish the interview date would have been better for me. It was 2 weeks before the end of the college semester.

Advice

The company is great for your first job. They are huge in the medical industry and are great in adding value to their employees. They provide lots of training as the programming language they work with is unique to the medical industry. Make sure to show that you are willing to learn and grow as that is the most important aspect to have here.

Software Developer Intern

May - August 2018 • Madison, WI

What I liked

I chose this internship specifically because the hiring process was so wonderful. I came to find that the company had set me up for success as an intern. I was given a Team Lead and a mentor to help me through my assigned project, which I saw from start to finish during my eleven weeks there. At the end, I was able to present my finished product to the entire application team, all of whom were excited to know about what I had done.

What I wish was different

I wish that I had gotten more of a chance to see other areas of the company, as well as more chances to gather feedback about my design from end users.

Advice

Let them know what you want to do ahead of time. I got lucky with a good project, but the more specific you are about the sort of work that you want to be doing, the more likely they'll match you with a job that you care about.

UXD Intern

May - August 2018 • Verona, WI

What I liked

The environment is amazing, the UX team are super friendly and knowledgable people and the Verona campus is so creative and fun. I got to see my designs come to life by working with developers and that was really worthwhile. I also got to interact with many other people and environments that I probably would not have available to me in many other places.

What I wish was different

I wish I could have been assigned to more than one project. Having side projects and more small tasks to do to split up the work would have been nice.

Advice

Talk to everyone and get your hands in more projects than your own: everyone is working on very interesting projects and therefore will have a lot of new skills and experiences to offer you!

What I liked

The amount of freedom given to me in terms of my work life and project.

What I wish was different

I noticed there was a lack of diversity in the employees at Epic; I wish there was a wider variety of people across different walks of life represented in Epic's employee base.

Advice

If you have a project with Hyperspace Web, CodeSearch will be your best friend. Look at what has been written before and assimilate it to your project specification.
