BHI Energy

Junior Valve Technician

September 2020 • Waterford, CT

What I liked

Interesting to work in a power plant for the first time as a complete novice and work under the supervision of experienced professionals.

What I wish was different

Preparation could have been much more in-depth for the onboarding process. Instead of just CBT, try more things in the field and in-person.

Advice

You will learn a lot of things about what it means to be a contractor during your time with BHI Energy. Depending on what you are doing, it will be a very rewarding job if you enjoy the hands-on aspect of work. As a nuclear worker, I was lucky to have a local powerplant serviced by BHI, and did not have to deal with the time away from home. My advice is to only pursue the job of a contractor if you can handle the nomadic nature of the job.

Finance Internship

May - July 2019 • Weymouth, MA

What I liked

The work environment was very nice. Everyone in the Accounting and Finance office was very friendly and helpful to me. The CFO came to our office at least once a week to talk to everyone. I was able to apply the knowledge at school to real-life practice.

What I wish was different

I wish I had talked to more people from different departments fo the company to network.

Advice

Other than following the guidelines or the tasks your supervisor gave you, you also need to proactively look for problems and look for solutions to solve problems. That would make you stand out from other candidates and become more valuable for a company.

Supply Chain Technician

August - September 2018 • Palo, IA

What I liked

It had "time and a half" pay for overtime, which ended up being four of the twelve hours every day. Though I thought working in a warehouse for a nuclear powerplant during their busiest time would be stressful, the work was not terribly so. It was also a very educational experience for someone who had never worked in the energy industry before.

What I wish was different

The days (or nights, in my case) were very long, as I was working during their refuel outage. Admittedly the work was at times monotonous, but BHI staffs many different nuclear jobs during the outage.

Advice

If you have the opportunity and would be interested in learning more about the power (or specifically nuclear)industry for any reason, try working an outage job like this one--but especially so if you are interested in working there in the future.
