A Group Data Engineering Manager is generally responsible for data ingestion, pipelines, data storage in data lakes, build and management of reporting platforms, ML Engineering, and manage low latency support to many Graph or API services. Data Engineering often responsible for building the Graph layer as well.
Most of the Product Groups in Microsoft work in a matrix reporting structure. PM, Feature Engineering, Data Engineering and Create Leaders jointly work on planning, building, delivering and sustaining process.
  1. Planning : Different teams in Microsoft has different release process. Based on that, a Group Engineering Manager [GEM] will spend 10-15 % of the time in product planning. Once the longer planning is complete, GEMs work with Project Managers to plan for the weekly Sprint
  2. Execution : GEMs spend significant time on daily stand-up meetings with different teams in your own organization. It also includes problem solving, architecture/design, collaboration with other teams etc. This takes about 50% of your time
  3. Managing people above and below. This takes about 25% of your time
  4. Learning - You have to keep learning new things. You will be spending about 10% of your time in it
