I enjoy applying the material I've learned through classes to real life scenarios. Philhaven isn't, more me exactly what I like but what I am naturally able to do. I am able to listen to stories and give people a sense that they are not alone, so I did that to the best of my ability.
What I wish was different
I maintain that working in such a setting must be seen as a God thing or else it would be too difficult. You witness real trauma and pain. Your heart breaks at the damage this world has taken on.
Make sure other portions of your life are more cheery. I spent my summer outside of work really developing friendships with some people who remained in the area. I led worship at my church and filled my life outside of work with love and optimism so that I was able to retain that light while working in darker circumstances.
