Software Engineering Intern

May - July 2018 • Redmond, WA

What I liked

Pay and other perks were outstanding, literally more than double what I was making at my next highest paying job. Management is also excellent. Many companies view work as a resource that needs to be extracted from workers in the same way that wine needs to be extracted from grapes, which is managements job. Microsoft views the role of management as giving individual contributors all of the resources and the setting that they need to perform at their best.

What I wish was different

I genuinely have no criticisms. My project and team were excellent. I learned more in 12 weeks there than I did in the last 2 semesters at school. They threw a bunch of parties and other events. I think I got 6 T-shirts, 2 nice jackets, and a beach towel just for working there. They are really invested in their workforce.

Advice

Work at Microsoft.

What I liked

My team, MS culture, and my work content. Also, WA is amazing

What I wish was different

Explorer Intern

What I liked

My project was extremely fun and interesting! Everyone in my team was very patient and always willing to answer my questions. My peers were amazing and it was really fun working with them! We also had a lot of fun participating in the intern events Microsoft organized throughout the summer.

Advice

For the application process: Apply early! By October a lot of people have already received their interview results or are almost done with the process. Also be honest in your interviews, I feel your personality is as important (or maybe more) as your skills. For the actual internship: Get out of your comfort zone! Talk to as many people as possible and try new things, use this opportunity to learn about different positions and teams.

What I liked

I enjoyed the flexibility of my schedule and the work that I did. With the Explore program, you work in groups or "pods" of 3. My podmates were great and I loved the socialization aspect of the internship.

What I wish was different

I wish it had been more structured.

Advice

Apply early! Meet your recruiter! Be able to talk about yourself.

Software Engineer Intern

May - August 2018 • Redmond, WA

What I liked

I got to work on real products and experience what it would really be like to work there full time. I loved Seattle and the Pacific Northwest as there was always lots to do. Microsoft also offered countless intern events to meet others, learn about the company and what employees were working on and have fun. We were also paid generously and your hours were generally very flexible.

What I wish was different

We did not have much say as to which team we'd be working on and, while everyone was very nice, the mentorship was sometimes not as strong as it could have been.

Advice

Meet as many people and go to as many events as you can but make sure you're doing a good job and learning a lot as well. Take advantage of everything Seattle has to offer both in the city and in the mountains.

Nothing really, maybe more challenging work, though this was the freshman-sophomore program so it's meant to ease you into the Software Engineering internship

Advice

Talk to a lot of people at the company and learn more about them, and go to as many events as you can, don't just focus on work

Software Engineer Intern

May - August 2018 • Redmond, WA

What I liked

I loved the amount of resources that the company puts into its interns. My entire team actively helped me to learn and to achieve on my project, and the company had a wealth of opportunities available to interns to take advantage of, both professionally and socially.

What I wish was different

I wish that the project had been more relevant to the direction I wanted to take my career, as opposed to what I'd already had experience with.

Advice

Ask for help often! Once I started asking for more help and resources from my team, I started to really thrive on my project.

Software Engineering Intern

May - August 2019 • Redmond, WA

What I liked

They spoil their interns with free things and events, have a lot of channels for interns to get their voice heard, and, most importantly, they have you work on things that actually contribute to the company; they refuse to give any intern mere busy work. For me in particular, I had a great manager and an overall fantastic experience. Plus they pay a lot, so that helps

What I wish was different

Advice

Stay on top of everything, both productivity-wise and team-chemistry-wise. Getting an internship is very doable, and getting a return offer for another internship is very doable, but getting a full-time offer is no small feat. They reject the majority of interns for full-time; you have to seriously prove yourself to get in, so be ready
