Pharmacy intern

September 2018 • Clark, NJ

What I liked

What I wish was different

Advice

I think working at a pharmacy is a great experience. There is patient care and you get to learn more about different medications. I recommend it to people who do not major in pharmacy but are interested in health care in general. This is because medications are a major component of healthcare treatment and healthcare workers should be more aware of it.

Finance Intern

June - August 2020 • Hartford, CT

What I liked

I liked how invested the company was in their employees growth and success. For that reason, this was an incredible learning experience.

What I wish was different

I wish the internship had been in person, but due to the circumstances, the company had no choice but to transition it to a virtual internship.

Advice

I would advise others who will have a similar experience to get as much as you can out of the opportunity by using every moment to learn and grow, and by meeting and connecting with others all across the organization.

General Management Intern

June - August 2020 • Plantation, FL

What I liked

I liked that I was able to attend a variety of interactive meetings across business units throughout the internship. We had several events where we got to interact with Aetna's president, Karen Lynch, and the president of CVS Health, Larry Merlo. I also enjoyed the fact that despite the internship being virtual due to COVID-19 the engagement team worked to make the internship as "normal" as possible by giving us many opportunities to network with other interns and employees across the company.

What I wish was different

Advice

I would take time before the internship begins to find out more about your specific role within general management and read up a bit on the terminology. The healthcare and insurance industry can be a bit of a learning curve for those who are new to it, so coming into the internship with some prior knowledge about Medicaid/Medicare, for example, can help give you a head start.

Insurance Underwriting Intern

June - August 2019 • Hartford, CT

What I liked

I loved being in the Aetna headquarters location! Most of the interns were also in Hartford, so I got to meet many different students from all over. All the interns were asked to solve a business problem presented by Aetna, so it was really fun to work with my group to create a presentation on our solution. I loved that Aetna organized many intern events, programs, and trainings, so I could meet people and learn about their experience at Aetna.

What I wish was different

I wish the internship was longer because it takes a while to get used to the building and the work that I was doing. By the time I got really comfortable with my job, summer was over.

Advice

My biggest advice is to network! I made many new contacts this summer just by asking if I could shadow people. I was able to network with people in my department and in many different departments as well.

Finance Intern

June - August 2018 • Hartford, CT

What I liked

It was a 10-week long, paid internship that allowed me to get a feel of a department in which I was considering for a career. In week 8 we were invited to present of what we had done that Summer to a recruiter for a Finance Leadership Development Program within Aetna, and we found out on the last day of the internship if we were receiving a full-time offer to return in June 2019 after we graduated, which I did. As well as those who weren't graduating this school year were informed if they were receiving an offer to return for another internship.

What I wish was different

I wish it was longer. Although, I did get an offer to work part-time through the school, which I accepted and will continue to work there until my full-time position starts in June 2019.

Advice

One piece of advice I would share about this experience is to ask as many questions as you can, network with as many people as you can, and to soak up all the knowledge that you can.
