Actuarial Intern

May - August 2020 • Bloomfield, CT

What I liked

I really enjoyed my experience at Cigna. They were able to create a meaningful virtual internship despite the last minute nature of the pandemic. They sent all the required equipment to work at home, which I really appreciated. I was able to work on one main project over the course of the summer that was engaging, challenging, and rewarding, and I was able to present this work at the end to the actuarial community. We also had case studies that I really enjoyed working on, multiple presentations to teach us more about the company, and leadership panels with Cigna's Executive Leadership Team. I also enjoyed how they gave interns feedback at numerous points during the summer so we could improve and develop!

What I wish was different

I wish that this experience had been in person, but given the circumstances it was completely understandable that it was virtual.

Advice

This was an incredible experience that I suggest all actuarial students apply to!

Actuarial Intern

May - August 2019 • Bloomfield, CT

What I liked

There is a big actuarial student community at Cigna. The intern committee cares about everyone's experience and wants the interns to learn and do well. Bloomfield was a beautiful area and the work I had was fulfilling. The company has great leadership.

What I wish was different

I wish there were fewer projects in Excel and more in R or Python. I also wished that there were more opportunities and resources to apply data science and advanced statistical methods to the work.

Advice

If interested in Cigna, I would learn as much as I can about the health insurance industry. Learn about the Affordable Care Act, big trends in health today, and health insurance problems faced by Americans today.

Project Intern

May 2019 • Bloomfield, CT

What I liked

The TECDP Program at Cigna is a great place to develop as a rising tech professional. You can grow as much as you want to, and it's easy to find people who can help you along that journey. I had plenty of opportunities to network with executives, and reach out to so many talented employees throughout the company to learn about any technology under the sun, and how to implement it. This past summer I learned more than I could have imagined! I had the privilege of seeing how technologies are used in the industry to facilitate business functions, and keep Cigna ahead of the competition. I also had the opportunity to be a Scrum Master for an intern team, comprised of talented developers and business analysts, to create a viable product that has value and potential to make an impact. Cigna gave me the chance to work with a group of people who are determined to meet their goals!

What I wish was different

I enjoyed the project much more than my role work. If I could spend more time working on just the project, then I certainly would.

Advice

Gratitude is key. Using all the resources to your advantage will help you squeeze the most out of this internship! Network, network, and network. Make friends and seek out like minded people. If you focus on those things, you will learn plenty about the company, the industry, and yourself in the process!
